Over Zoom, I met Caitlin and Garrick, this totally cool San Francisco couple, and immediately noticed their super joyous smiles. Then I saw their incredible collection of art in the background. Dare I say it actually made me a little (or a lot) jealous? :) I loved their love of art! As a holder of a fine arts degree, this definitely struck my heart in the best way. Once we finished chatting about their art-covered walls, we got into the art they were hoping for on their wedding day and our getting-to-know-each-other process. Our first visit felt more like chatting with a friend over wine than anything, and I was crossing my fingers that they'd get back to me with a 'yes'.
I was bursting with excitement when they actually invited me to capture their special day! They were also granting me complete creative freedom; I may have cried a little. Their wedding, held at Travis Marina under the iconic Golden Gate Bridge, was a great spot to enjoy just that. Their trust allowed me to approach the day with all the artistic creativity I felt. And while I held to my editorial, documentary imagery, I was also free to explore more movement, more color, and new lighting, some of which may be so nuanced it's hard to see, but I see it, and I feel proud.
While I always feel free to explore, most often what folks feel drawn to in my work is genuine authenticity, obvious joy, and finding the little moments among the big. Luckily, that's what comes naturally to me. Beyond those, I diligently cultivate pushing my boundaries. I didn't get through over 300 weddings to tread water. Caitlin and Garrick, thank you for trusting me and offering boundless freedom. You are the very best! May your journey together be filled with endless sunsets, disco dance parties, and moments of pure SF magic!
